Watten is THE card game of Bavaria, Tyrol and South Tyrol: four players in fixed partnerships, a 32-card German-suited deck and five cards per hand. Before every hand the Schlag (rank) and the trump suit are announced, three permanent top cards — Max, Welle and Spitz — beat everything, and the first team to take three tricks wins the hand. Watten in a nutshell

Played with 32 German-suited cards, five per player (three, then two). Forehand announces the Schlag, the dealer announces the trump suit. Three cards are always highest: the king of hearts (Max), the seven of bells (Welle) and the seven of acorns (Spitz), followed by the Hauptschlag and the remaining rank cards. There is no obligation to follow suit — the only exception is "trump or critical" when the Hauptschlag leads the first trick. First team to three tricks wins the hand for two points; teams raise the stakes with "Gehst?" answered by "Scho" (take it on) or "Fort" (concede). First team to 15 points wins the game.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Watten?

In Bavaria 32 German-suited cards (acorns, leaves, hearts, bells); each player is dealt five (three, then two). Tyrol and South Tyrol often add a 33rd card, the Weli — this version plays the Bavarian 32-card game.

How many players play Watten?

Four, in two fixed partnerships (opposite seats). Missing players are filled automatically by AI.

What are the criticals in Watten?

Three always-highest cards: the king of hearts (Max), the seven of bells (Welle) and the seven of acorns (Spitz). They even beat the Hauptschlag.

What do "Schlag" and "trump" mean?

The Schlag is a rank (ace down to seven) announced by forehand; the trump suit is announced by the dealer. The card holding both is the Hauptschlag; the other three cards of that rank are the Blinde.

Do you have to follow suit in Watten?

No — unusually for a card game, any card may be played to any trick. Exception: when the Hauptschlag leads the first trick, "trump or critical" applies until the Hauptschlag is captured.

What do "Gehst?" and "Scho" mean?

"Gehst?" asks the opponents to take on a raised hand value. "Scho" accepts it, "Fort" concedes — then the betting team scores the previous value (two points against a first raise).

When is a team "gespann" (tight)?

From 13 points (with 15 as the target) a team may no longer bet first, but it may still accept the opponents' raise.

What happens if my timer runs out?

Each decision gets 30 seconds; after that the system plays an automatic action so the table keeps moving.

How do I invite friends?

Create a private table and share its five-character code — your friends join your table directly with it.
